news. >>> and here's a quick look now outside. this is from our traffic camera along 880 in oakland. traffic is moving a little slowly tonight but it is indeed moving. moving to the south, this is the 280 interchange in san jose. it looks like traffic is pretty light there. bill martin has been tracking this latest system for us, and bill, you said this rain may linger on into the evening? >> it's going to linger, heather. like we were talking about earlier, it hasn't rained in a few weeks and the roads get a little wet. this is not a big storm, but the roads get very slick. it draws the residues to the surface and you get slick roadways. the heaviest rain has been in the north bay. there's santa rosa right now. you can see the darker greens? obviously, that's the heavier rain, just north of napa. but basically the heavier rains are widely spread. we're seeing light, scattered sprinkles throughout the area. it's sort of the same light green. you just saw patti up there by berkeley. this is a light, low-grade rainfall that's going to continue as we go into the evening hours. there wi

today. in less than an hour oakland police and city officials are scheduled to address the recent rash of deadly violence in that city. alex savidge is live right now at city hall with what city leaders are expected to say. alex what are they expected to say? >> reporter: well, they are supposed to come up with some solutions some ways to try to curb the shootings. it was a particularly violent weekend in oakland. this announcement will involve both the mayor and police chief. again it will happen within the hour. the announcement will take place right at the spot where three-year-old carlos nava was killed back in 2001. you may remember this shooting. the young boy hit by a stray bullet and right now there is a mural that has been painted in that area in his honor. no one from oakland police or the mayor's office has culled me back. we do understand the focus will be on the four homicides in oakland this past friday and the 11 people wounded by gunfire over the weekend. just last night five people were shot at a birthday party. the surge in violence has led larry reid to be called as

following another violent weekend on the streets of oakland. four people killed. 11 others wounded since friday. tara mority tells us the latest shooting took place at a birthday party. >> reporter: that is right. it happened at a birthday party and basically all of the victims were men. and they scattered and ran to a neighbor's house for help. this comes after a particularly bloody weekend. last nights shooting happening off seminary and foothill. just the latest in a rash of violence since friday. four people were killed friday in a bloody six hour stretch that started at 2:30 in the afternoon all victims there males ranging in age from 17- 30. it's not known whether the 11 shootings that happened on saturday and sunday were linked not four killings friday, but police say friday's incident is gang related. all 11 victims who suffered gunshot wounds are expected to survive. friday's mayhem led to a conference call between the mayor and oakland's police chief and several staff members. there were 131 homicides in oakland last year. so far this year alone there have been six. comin

fire detroys a three- story building in oakland. the raging fire broke out just after five -this evening this is video of the scene from our helicopter partnership with abc 7. from earlier this evening. kron 4's philippe djegal is live at the scene. where the fire investigation is still ongoing tonight. philippe? >> reporter: pam, we are on the 600 block of harrison. the fire department said that this is been vacant quite for some time. even squatters could be the cause for this fire. three men actually were found on the top of the roof on the next building of this burning structure. they have been treated. there is a company that is boarding up the windows and as you can see there or at least for water hoses onto the building. at least four of them. at 5: 21 they were able to contain the fire within three hours it was completely controlled. the never fire never hopped to a n adjacent building structures for however, this is what"take a look at what the scene looked like earlier." they noticed that three men were standing on top of the building that is now destroyed. they were tr

archer. and i am going to take him down. breaking news in oakland: t city just saw it's 4-th home of the d >>> breaking news in oakland. the city just saw its fourth homicide of the day. the most recent just a few blocks away from bishop o'dowd high school in east oakland. julia goodvich in oakland. >> reporter: the suspects are still at large. it has been a deadly and chaotic day. four homicides in six hours. the latest shooting reported at 18:15 tonight -- 8:15 tonight. police searching open car port, and the entire area for the suspects at large. neighbors reported they heard 20-30 gunshots. one man is confirmed dead. this following three other homicides today, those happening within a 2-hour timespan this afternoon. police are still looking for the suspects in all of today's deadly incidents. but they are especially concentrating their efforts along north avenue where this latest shooting occurred. it is an active crime scene. at this point it's still active, certainly a lot of gun fire today, and four homicides in the past six hours. but at this point, no correlation as to wheth

oakland has finally made a decision on a very controversial proposal to reduce violent crime. it is now poised to hire one of the best known policing experts in america, bill bratton. nbc bay area's christie smith spoke with them this morning. she joins us with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. the message coming out of the oakland police department this morning is that oakland has only one police chief, howard jordan, that bill bratton will offer advice on how to reduce crime here. doesn't have to be what worked in new york or l.a., but boy, there is a lot of doubt. the 2:00 a.m. vote brought a mix of relief and anger. the city council approved a contract hiring high profile police chief bill bratton to help oakland get a handle on violent crime, but opponents say his aggressive style just won't work here. >> i think that the zero tolerance also has this really destabilizing effect on communities. it relies a lot on kind of massive police sweeps and high numbers of arrests. >> reporter: some worry that bratton will use tactics like stop and frisk that may lea

freeway sideshow oakland. tonight, we are getting eyewitness accounts of what stopped traffic on interstate 8-80 yesterday afternoon. a bunch of cars parked along the freeway watching others spinning out. but as kron four's philippe djegal reports. this video may help investigators catch the criminals. the to take you back to the fire in oakland we showed you at the top of the show. you can see the flames burning through the top of the building. we understand it's a three-story building right off of 880 in a residential mixed use neighborhood. you can see the fire is burning right through the roof of that building. there are lots of firefighters on scene. traffic is moving around the home, and it's butting up against 880. so far we haven't heard any word of any traffic problems. a great amount of smoke billowing into the air. a tough situation for firefighters. it is very dark and, as you can see, it appears to be raining in that area right now. but still a lot of thick smoke and flames coming up. at this point we're hearing the building is awan dobandoned but there's no condition firmati confirmation it has been checked o out. >>> well, the hype in coupertin didn't live up to the hype. investors lost a good chunk of money. let's check in with scott budman and the apple stores. underperforming. we haven't said that about apple in a long time. >> reporter: when you're the most va

staying. he surrendered to police at a hotel in oakland. also new at 11. a federal court ruled that two medical marijuana dispensaries. harborside health center in oakland, and its smaller operation in san jose. will stay open. the court denied motions that would have stopped marijuana sales at the properties. however, a judge did schedule a hearing later this month, to hear further arguments from the city of oakland. the court found. that injunctions would not be an appropriate means of preventing illegal use of marijuana at those locations. harborside, the largest medical marijuana club in the state, has been in business for more than six years. >> jacqueline: with reduced visibility some better conditions in half moon bay. but we are expecting portions of the bait to see a dense fog advisory issued. the east bay shore in the inland. the north bay has not been included within the advisory. that is a possibility with i would not be surprised. if it could be extended. and i would say that the areas highlighted on your screen could show some significant reduced visibility in the morning.
